Ryan Shazier Won't Play In 2018, But He Still Wants To Play

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said today that injured linebacker Ryan Shazier won’t play in 2018. “He knows that, and we know that, and we’re gonna continue to support him in his recovery,” Colbert said, adding that they will keep him on the roster next year. “We know that’s a challenge, ‘cause we’ll be at 89 players and fortunately for Ryan, he’s covered in that manner.” Shazier suffered a serious spinal injury last December when he crumpled to the turf while making a tackle in Cincinnati. He underwent spinal stabilization surgery shortly after the injury, but as he recovered, there was almost no concrete information about Shazier’s condition—could he walk? Did he suffer neurological damage? Two months after the injury, the first reports surfaced that Shazier coul…

Why Your Team Sucks 2015: New York Jets

Some people are fans of the New York Jets. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the New York Jets. This 2015 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Your team: New York Jets. Your 2014 record: 4-12 … Your coach: Todd Bowles. “As soon as I got to be an All-American, I dislocated my wrist.” Yup. Sounds like a born Jet! Anyway, Bowles arrives in New York as the replacement for Rex Ryan. The former was a hero to this team’s primary fanbase of surly ConEd manhole scrubbers. But that’s in the past now. Funtime is OVER. With Rex Ryan, you suck, but at least there are snacks. Now the Jets are going to suck in the most nondescript way possible. This is the pattern in New York. The Jets bring in a brash guy like Rex Ryan and fans and the media are like, “…

Emotional Story Inspires ESPN Anchor To Quote Mariah Carey

There's a lot going on here. A lot of stimuli, you know. Let's break it down. There's the story itself, which is that Chiefs all-purpose big dude Leonard Pope jumped in the pool at a party in his hometown, Americus, Georgia, to save a six year-old boy from drowning. The kid didn't know how to swim, and Pope did. He jumped into the pool with his clothes on, cellphone in pocket. Good deeds. Hooray, Pope. Then there's this ESPN interview. Reischea Canidate, who is apparently not related to Trung, felt such a strong connection to this story (or to Mariah Carey?) that she had to mention her song, "Hero," in her intro. Of course, there are so many songs that might mention heroes, or songs whose vaguely uplifting lyrics are equally peripherally relevant to…

U.S. women's soccer shuts out Brazil, wins first Olympic gold since 2012

Mallory Swanson scored in the 57th minute and Alyssa Naeher made four saves to lead the U.S. women's national team to its fifth Olympics gold medal with a 1-0 victory against Brazil in Paris on Saturday. While the gold medal was its first since 2012, the U.S. also has a silver and a bronze in the eight Olympic tournaments. The only time the U.S. did not medal came in the Rio Olympics in 2016. Naeher made a spectacular leaping save with her right hand in the 90+4 minute on a header by Adriana to preserve the win. On the Swanson goal, Brazilian defender Thais gave away the ball to Korbin Albert at midfield and she fed a through ball to Swanson to start the break. Sophia Smith was offside but she wisely stayed out of the play, and she and Swanson moved toward the goal with no defend…

Christian Yelich's Injury Hasn't Slowed the Brewers One Bit

data-mm-id=”_fvf1cnr1w”>When National League MVP candidate Christian Yelich slumped in the batter's box clutching his kneecap, the obituary for the Milwaukee Brewers' championship run seemed to write itself. Yelich's value to the Brewers cannot be understated. The centerpiece of Milwaukee's batting lineup, Yelich leads the majors in slugging percentage at .671, and Win Probability Added at 7.1. This means that if he were removed from the lineup for the season, the Brewers would have 7.1 wins fewer. And now? The Brewers, one game back of the second Wild Card spot when the injury occurred, are devoid of his services for the remainder of the season. Better luck next year.Or so everyone thought. As the Marlins, Cardinals, and Padres have learned this week, the Milwauke…

Skip Bayless: Ezekiel Elliott is Killing Cowboys, Dak Prescott Can Match Tom Brady in Big Games

data-mm-id=”_7n3t4nun8″>Much like his FS1 colleague Colin Cowherd, Skip Bayless believes the Dallas Cowboys are about to become the Golden State Warriors. But whereas Cowherd feels they're headed toward a Mark Jackson-esque fate with no championships, Bayless feels the opposite."Dak Prescott can match Tom Brady in big game, big stage playmaking. In his 1st 3 years, he led the NFL in game-winning drives. Given the opportunities on bigger stages, Dak can match Tom Brady in clutchness." — @RealSkipBayless pic.twitter.com/jUp5ex7nBq— UNDISPUTED (@undisputed) November 20, 2019In debating with Shannon Sharpe on Wednesday's episode of Undisputed, Bayless believes that Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott can eventually "match" his Sunday opponent Tom Brady, he of …

It's Almost Time For Someone to Proclaim Justin Herbert the Top Prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft

data-mm-id=”_wrnmhnes9″>There was a time when Joe Burrow, the national championship and Heisman-winning golden armed quarterback from LSU was the consensus No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. After throwing for 60 touchdowns and 5,671 yards with a 202 college quarterback rating there could be no doubt. At least until there was. See, Burrow hasn't thrown a football with great success in a game in over a month. And absence makes the take grow hotter. The Crimson Tide has turned on the LSU quarterback. The actual sure-thing franchise quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft is Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa. Tua was injured this year, which people forget. In 2018, he had an insane season of his own and the Miami Dolphins are happy to pick third where they know the best player in the draft …

Even Michael Jordan Thought Michael Jordan Would Struggle Against Modern Zone Defense

data-mm-id=”_kqkkea1xe”>Many people believe that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever. Some take that opinion so seriously that they believe Jordan would have destroyed everyone in this era in a way that made defenders in the 80's and 90's look effective. One person who did not believe that was Michael Jordan, who worried about star players being hampered by defensive rule changes back around the turn of the century. Via the Chicago Tribune:”Jordan was making an impassioned plea before the competition committee that had gathered to consider rules changes to enliven the NBA game. Jordan spoke passionately. If teams were able to play zone defenses, he said, he never would have had the career he did.”So it's completely fair if you want to project players st…

'Game of Thrones' Final Season Was the Biggest Letdown in Television History

data-mm-id=”_agakn470q”>Game of Thrones ended about a year ago. I was aware the anniversary of the finale was approaching and considered rewatching the season. The original plan was to potentially recap episodes and see how I felt a year later. I made it approximately 10 minutes into the first episode of the season and had to turn off the television and go for a walk.I watched the Previously On and was reminded of the many storylines that did not matter because when it came down to it, this was about the ultimate battle between the living and the dead. It didn't matter which side you were on, everyone needed to band together and fight a common enemy and thought that sounded pretty darn relevant. Then, the more I thought about it as clips continued to roll showing old characters an…
